Macron rejects forced regime change in Tehran

French President Emmanuel Macron has revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump has put forward a proposal for a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, as international concern mounts over the risk of a broader regional war.
Speaking to reporters at the G7 summit in Canada—which Trump departed prematurely due to developments in the Middle East—Macron said the U.S. has initiated diplomatic overtures aimed at halting hostilities and opening the door to wider discussions.
“There is a proposal to meet and exchange views. A proposal was made specifically to achieve a ceasefire and then start broader discussions,” Macron said.
While details of the proposal remain limited, Macron emphasized that the onus is now on the conflicting parties to respond positively to the initiative.
“We need to see now if the parties will follow it,” he added, signaling cautious optimism but also acknowledging the complexities on the ground.
In a pointed remark, Macron also warned against any attempt to forcibly overthrow the government in Tehran, calling such a move a “strategic mistake” that could further destabilize the region.
The French president’s comments come amid escalating hostilities following Israeli strikes on Iran and Iranian retaliatory attacks, which have led to regional alarm and prompted diplomatic activity among world powers.
The proposal marks a potential shift in Washington's tone, suggesting a move toward de-escalation, though its success will depend heavily on the willingness of both sides to engage in talks. (ILKHA)
