Nine dead in devastating fire at Massachusetts assisted living facility

A devastating fire tore through the Gabriel House assisted living facility in Fall River late Sunday night, killing nine residents and injuring dozens in what authorities are calling one of the city’s deadliest tragedies in recent years.
The blaze erupted around 9:50 p.m., triggering an urgent response from the Fall River Fire Department. Over 50 firefighters, including 30 off-duty personnel, battled intense flames and thick smoke as residents, many with limited mobility, cried for help from windows, some clinging precariously outside. Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon described the scene as chaotic, with crews working tirelessly to rescue trapped individuals.
“This is an unfathomable tragedy for the families and our entire community,” Chief Bacon said during a somber press briefing. “Losing even one life is heartbreaking; losing nine is beyond comprehension.”
Firefighters heroically saved over a dozen residents using ladders and pulled many more from the burning building. Despite their efforts, nine residents perished, and at least one person remained in critical condition as of Monday morning. Of the facility’s 69 residents, more than 30 were transported to local and regional hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to severe. Five firefighters also sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the operation.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by state and local authorities, with no official determination yet released. The names of the deceased are being withheld pending family notifications.
Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan called the incident a “dark day” for the city, stating: “Our hearts go out to the victims and their loved ones. We are grieving as a community.” The tragedy has sparked renewed scrutiny of fire safety measures in assisted living facilities, particularly regarding evacuation plans for vulnerable residents with mobility challenges. State agencies have committed to supporting the ongoing investigation and providing resources for survivors, families, and first responders.
As the community mourns, support services are being mobilized to address the emotional and practical needs of those affected by this catastrophic loss. (ILKHA)
