The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has disclosed a staggering toll of more than 2,500 migrant deaths in the Mediterranean Sea since the commencement of the year in attempts to reach European shores.

"As of September 24, there are more than 2,500 people among the dead and missing in 2023. This figure represents a two-thirds increase compared to 1,680 in the same period in 2022."
