Palestinians commemorate 21st anniversary of Dr. Abdel Aziz Al-Rantisi’s martyrdom

Palestinians across the occupied territories and beyond are marking the 21st anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Abdel Aziz Al-Rantisi, a distinguished physician, resistance leader, and symbol of steadfastness against Israeli aggression.
Al-Rantisi and two of his companions were assassinated by an Israeli airstrike on April 17, 2004, as they traveled in his car in Gaza.
Born on October 23, 1947, in the village of Rantis, Al-Rantisi’s life was profoundly shaped by the trauma of displacement. His family fled to the Khan Yunis refugee camp during his infancy, where they endured the hardships of exile. Despite these adversities, Al-Rantisi excelled academically, earning a scholarship to study medicine in Egypt.
After graduating from Alexandria University, Al-Rantisi returned to Gaza to serve as a physician, dedicating himself to the welfare of his people. However, his role as a healer was soon overtaken by the pressing need to confront the violence and oppression of Israeli occupation. His activism frequently brought him into conflict with Israeli forces, leading to multiple arrests and years of imprisonment.
Al-Rantisi emerged as a prominent figure in the Muslim Brotherhood and was instrumental in the founding of Hamas, the Islamic Resistance Movement. His unwavering commitment to Palestinian liberation and his powerful advocacy for justice earned him the admiration of his people and made him a central figure in the resistance.
During the Second Intifada, which began in 2000, Al-Rantisi rose to further prominence, assuming leadership of Hamas in Gaza following the assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. His steadfast opposition to Israeli occupation and his leadership in one of Palestine's most challenging periods solidified his status as a beacon of resistance.
Despite surviving numerous assassination attempts, Al-Rantisi’s life was tragically cut short by an Israeli warplane targeting him on April 17, 2004. His martyrdom was a profound loss to the Palestinian cause, yet his legacy endures as a testament to the resilience and defiance of a people under occupation.
As Palestinians gather to commemorate his life and sacrifice, they highlight his enduring legacy of resistance, courage, and unwavering dedication to liberation. Leaders and citizens alike have reiterated their commitment to the principles Al-Rantisi upheld, emphasizing the continued struggle for justice and freedom in Palestine.
This anniversary serves as a solemn reminder of the heavy toll of Israeli aggression and the resilience of Palestinians in the face of decades of oppression. Dr. Abdel Aziz Al-Rantisi's memory lives on as an emblem of the enduring spirit of resistance. (ILKHA)
