Sen. Bernie Sanders calls for end to U.S. military aid to Israel

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders issued a strong condemnation of U.S. military support for Israel on Monday, July 21, 2025, citing the escalating humanitarian crisis and rising Palestinian death toll in the Gaza Strip.
In a post on X, Sanders declared: “130 people were killed and more than 1,000 wounded in Gaza this weekend. People are starving. Many were shot by the Israeli military while simply trying to get food. This is completely insane and unacceptable. No more U.S. military aid to Israel.”
Sanders’ remarks come as reports indicate that the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 59,000 since Israel’s military campaign began on October 7, 2023, with the majority of casualties being women and children. The ongoing Israeli aggression has devastated the enclave, collapsing its healthcare system, destroying over 60% of housing units, and causing severe food shortages that have pushed parts of Gaza toward famine.
According to Amnesty International, Israel’s actions, including deliberate restrictions on humanitarian aid, constitute acts of genocide, with a report published on December 5, 2024, documenting how Israel’s blockade and bombardment have created conditions “calculated to bring about [the] physical destruction” of Palestinians in Gaza.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants in November 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces an ongoing genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), initiated by South Africa in December 2023, which notes that Israel’s actions, including its 16-year blockade and relentless military operations, violate the Genocide Convention. The ICJ has ordered Israel to allow humanitarian aid and prevent acts that could be considered genocidal, but human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, report that Israel has failed to comply, with aid deliveries dropping significantly since the court’s rulings.
Sanders, a longtime critic of U.S. support for Israel’s actions in Gaza, has repeatedly called for an end to the $18 billion in annual military aid provided by the United States, emphasizing America’s complicity in the humanitarian disaster. In a May 2025 Senate speech, he described Israel’s policies as “despicable” and accused the Netanyahu government of waging “an all-out barbaric war against the Palestinian people.” (ILKHA)
