After a devastating 24-day battle, the deadly Eaton and Palisades wildfires in Southern California have been fully contained, local media reported Friday.
The blazes, which began on January 7th, ravaged thousands of acres and caused widespread destruction, fueled by extreme drought and powerful winds.
The Palisades Fire originated in Pacific Palisades, east of Malibu, quickly spreading due to the dry conditions. Simultaneously, the Eaton Fire ignited in the Angeles National Forest foothills before impacting Altadena.
Tragically, the fires claimed the lives of at least 29 people. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed 17 deaths in the Eaton Fire and 12 in the Palisades Fire, according to NBC News. Investigations into the causes of the fires are still underway.
The Palisades Fire scorched 23,448 acres, destroying 6,837 structures and damaging over 1,000 more, Cal Fire reported. The Eaton Fire burned 14,021 acres, with nearly 4,000 acres in urban areas, destroying 9,418 structures, including historic buildings in Altadena.
Significant rainfall earlier this week provided much-needed relief, helping firefighters finally contain the blazes. “Rain showers across Southern California have greatly reduced current fire potential,” Cal Fire Chief Joe Tyler stated, as reported by the media outlet. (ILKHA)
