Sudan faces world's largest displacement crisis, says WHO
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan has reached a critical point, described by the World Health Organization (WHO) representative in the country as the "world's largest displacement crisis."
Mohammad Taufiq Mashal reported the escalation during a UN press briefing, citing data from various sources.
Over the past eight months, conflict in Sudan has expanded from Khartoum to multiple states, resulting in a significant toll. Mashal revealed that at least 12,260 people have been killed since April, with over 33,000 people injured in the conflict.
However, he emphasized that the true impact goes beyond these numbers, as disruptions to the health system have led to additional deaths due to the lack of access to essential services.
Sudan is grappling with a massive displacement crisis, with one in every 15 Sudanese now displaced. The total number of people seeking safety within Sudan or neighboring countries has surged to nearly 6.8 million. These displacements expose individuals to increased vulnerability, including diseases, malnutrition, gender-based violence, and acute mental health distress.
The representative highlighted the worsening and spreading of disease outbreaks in the region. Cholera has expanded from three to nine states in a month, with 5,400 suspected and confirmed cases and 170 deaths reported. Measles cases in 11 states have exceeded 4,500, resulting in 104 deaths, while dengue has led to 6,000 cases and 56 related deaths in 14 states.
Insecurity and bureaucratic obstacles continue to hinder humanitarian access and the movement of supplies, making many hospitals inaccessible. The precarious situation in Sudan demands urgent international attention and intervention to address the escalating crisis. (ILKHA)
