Two dead, ten injured as building collapses in central Madrid

Two people were killed and ten others injured when a building undergoing renovation collapsed in the heart of Spain’s capital on Monday.
The incident occurred on Calle de las Hileras, near the Opera district of Madrid, where a five-story building partially caved in, sending clouds of dust and debris across the street. Witnesses reported hearing a loud crash moments before the collapse.
According to emergency services, the upper floors gave way and progressively fell through to the basement level. Rescue teams managed to recover the bodies of two workers trapped under the rubble, while search operations continue for two others who remain missing.
Local officials confirmed that among the ten injured workers, one is in critical condition. Firefighters, police units, and medical teams swiftly responded to the scene, cordoning off nearby streets as precautionary measures were taken to prevent further collapse.
Madrid authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the structural failure, while restoration activities in neighboring buildings have been temporarily suspended.
The tragic incident has shocked the city, drawing public sympathy for the victims and renewed attention to safety conditions at renovation sites across Spain.(ILKHA)
