British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk have launched talks on a landmark UK-Poland Treaty aimed at enhancing military and security cooperation to address shared challenges in Europe.

The treaty comes amid escalating concerns over Russian aggression in Ukraine, cross-border human trafficking, and the growing impacts of climate change. It will focus on bolstering European security through joint military initiatives, countering disinformation, and addressing hybrid threats.

The agreement will strengthen collaboration on key defence projects, including the MIECZNIK AH140 Frigate Programme and the NAREW Ground-Based Air Defence Programme. Poland will receive over 1,000 air missiles through the NAREW initiative, a joint effort between UK defence firm MBDA and Polish company PGZ, enhancing its defensive capabilities and overall European security.

As part of the partnership, a new UK-Poland Joint Programme Office will open in Bristol this year, staffed by personnel from both nations. This facility will oversee Poland’s next-generation air defence systems while boosting the UK’s defence industry.

The treaty will prioritize combating organized immigration crime. Poland, facing increased migrant crossings at its Belarusian border, has been on the frontline of Europe’s efforts against human trafficking networks. The UK recently introduced a sanctions regime targeting people-smuggling gangs, further aligning with Poland’s initiatives.

Prime Minister Starmer emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating: "With ever-increasing threats to Europe’s security, now is the time to take our partnership to the next level, ensuring we tackle the big issues that rebound on the British people at home – from Putin’s aggression to the vile people-smuggling gangs trading in human misery."

During his visit to Warsaw, Starmer will engage with Polish business leaders to strengthen economic ties and encourage inward investment in the UK. Trade between the two countries has reached £30.6 billion in 2024, with British exports to Poland supporting approximately 75,000 jobs in the UK.

InPost, a leading Polish logistics company, announced a £600 million investment to expand its UK operations by 2029, bringing its total investment to £1 billion and supporting up to 12,000 new jobs.

The UK-Poland Treaty marks a key pillar in the UK’s efforts to reset relations with Europe. It builds on recent agreements with France and Germany and aligns with Starmer’s Plan for Change, prioritizing national security and economic growth.
