The United Nations expressed grave concern on Thursday over the deteriorating security situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly in South Kivu, as the M23 rebel group continues its rapid advance towards the city of Bukavu.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric highlighted the volatile conditions during a press briefing, citing credible reports of Rwandan Defense Forces crossing the border in support of the M23.
According to Dujarric, the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo, MONUSCO, has documented ongoing clashes between the M23, the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC), and allied forces. The situation has been exacerbated since MONUSCO’s withdrawal from South Kivu in June, redirecting its efforts to defend critical positions in North Kivu, including the cities of Goma and Sake. However, fighting persists in these areas, with the M23 intensifying its offensive and capturing strategic towns en route to Goma, the provincial capital.
“The situation in Goma remains tense and volatile, with occasional shootings reported within the city,” Dujarric noted, underscoring the precarious security environment. He also voiced concerns about rising humanitarian risks, particularly the threat of inter-ethnic conflict in regions now lacking UN peacekeeping presence.
The M23, allegedly supported by Rwanda, has been a focal point of international scrutiny. Despite repeated denials from Rwandan President Paul Kagame, evidence of Rwandan involvement continues to surface, further complicating efforts to stabilize the region.
The UN’s alarm comes amid a broader humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC, where the conflict has displaced millions and heightened ethnic tensions. As the M23 advances, the international community faces mounting pressure to address the escalating violence and protect vulnerable civilian populations. (ILKHA)
