The United Nations Security Council has announced the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) until December 3, 2023.
In a unanimous decision, the 15-member Council adopted Resolution 2685 (2023) (to be issued as document S/RES/2685(2023)), emphasizing the continued importance of UNITAMS and requesting regular reporting from the Secretary-General on the implementation of the Mission's mandate every 90 days.
The Council also reaffirmed its commitment to actively address the evolving situation in Sudan.
The Security Council members conveyed their unified endorsement of UNITAMS, recognizing the crucial role the Mission plays in coordinating the United Nations' response to Sudan's multifaceted challenges.
The extension of the mandate underscores the Council's determination to support Sudan during this critical transitional phase.
UNITAMS, established in June 2020, serves as an integrated mission, assisting Sudan in its political transition, peacebuilding efforts, and socio-economic development.
The Mission's extension reflects the international community's recognition of the ongoing complexities and the need for sustained support to promote stability and progress in Sudan.
By extending the mandate, the Security Council reiterates its commitment to actively engage in addressing Sudan's challenges and working closely with national stakeholders to advance the country's peace, security, and development goals. (ILKHA)
