Since U.S. President Donald Trump took office on January 20, approximately 11,000 migrants have been deported from the United States to Mexico, according to Mexican authorities.
Speaking at a press conference, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that among those deported, about 2,500 are non-Mexican nationals. She also emphasized that Mexico has repatriated migrants to Honduras via both air and land, stressing that the process remains voluntary.
"It is voluntary. We will accompany them to ensure they can return to their home countries," Sheinbaum stated.
The deportations come shortly after Mexico reached an agreement with the Trump administration to prevent U.S. tariffs on Mexican goods. Under this deal, Mexico committed to deploying thousands of police officers along its northern border to curb migration into the United States.
President Trump, speaking at a White House briefing, defended the deportations, saying: "We are taking strong action to secure our borders and ensure that those who enter our country illegally are sent back. Mexico is doing its part, and we appreciate their cooperation."
Trump also signaled that the U.S. expects to deport around 100,000 individuals in the coming months, as part of the administration’s broader immigration enforcement efforts.
The agreement between Washington and Mexico highlights ongoing regional efforts to address illegal immigration, as both governments seek to manage border security and diplomatic relations. (ILKHA)
