Türkiye’s chicken meat production rises annually despite monthly drop

Türkiye’s chicken meat production reached 218,260 tonnes in February 2025, while hen egg production totaled approximately 1.55 billion units, according to data released Monday by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).
The figures reveal contrasting trends within the poultry sector. While chicken meat production saw a year-on-year increase, egg production continued to decline both on a monthly and annual basis.
According to TurkStat’s report, chicken meat production in February rose by 8.2% compared to the same month last year, despite a 6.4% decrease from the previous month, when production stood at 233,223 tonnes. The number of chickens slaughtered also grew by 5.8% year-on-year, indicating stronger demand or supply chain activity in meat production.
In contrast, hen egg production fell by 10.8% compared to February 2024, and declined by 6.4% month-on-month. February’s egg output totaled 1 billion 547 million 93 thousand units, down from 1 billion 652 million 615 thousand units in January.
During the January–February 2025 period, chicken meat production increased by 11.5%, and the number of slaughtered chickens rose by 8.8%, compared with the same two-month period of the previous year. However, hen egg production saw a 10.4% decrease in the same period.
Industry analysts are monitoring the ongoing decline in egg production, which may be attributed to rising feed costs, seasonal factors, or shifts in domestic and export demand. Meanwhile, the upward trend in chicken meat production suggests resilience in that segment of the market despite broader economic challenges.
The poultry sector remains a critical component of Türkiye’s agricultural economy, both for domestic consumption and export. Further data in the coming months will reveal whether the current trends are temporary fluctuations or indicators of longer-term shifts in production dynamics. (ILKHA)
