At least 14 migrants dead after dinghy capsizes off Bodrum
At least 14 migrants have died after an inflatable dinghy capsized in the Aegean Sea off the Turkish resort town of Bodrum, officials confirmed on Friday. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when the vessel, reportedly carrying 18 people, began taking on water and sank within 10 minutes.
Two survivors were rescued: one Afghan national managed to swim to Celebi Island, while the other was rescued by the Turkish Coast Guard. Rescue operations are ongoing for the two remaining missing individuals, involving four coast guard vessels, a helicopter, and a specialist diving team.
Bodrum is a common departure point for migrants attempting to reach nearby Greek islands such as Kos, Samos, and Rhodes, which are key entry points into the European Union. The Aegean Sea remains one of the most perilous migration routes to Europe.
According to the International Organization for Migration's Missing Migrants Project, nearly 1,400 migrants have died so far this year while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe.
The Turkish authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and the identities of the victims are yet to be confirmed. The tragedy highlights the ongoing risks faced by migrants seeking to reach Europe via the Mediterranean. (ILKHA)
