Iran targets commercial vessel in Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for US aggression
Iran has announced that it targeted a commercial vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions in one of the world's most strategically important maritime corridors.
The vessel, reported to be sailing under the Thai flag, sustained damage in the incident, while its crew safely reached a secure port. The attack comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, prompting renewed international concern over security in the Gulf.
Iran's semi-official Tasnim News Agency claimed the operation was carried out by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy after the vessel allegedly ignored warnings to alter its course. Iranian media also released footage said to show the attack. Thai authorities have not yet officially confirmed the incident or disclosed details about the vessel, its cargo or crew.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global energy chokepoint through which millions of barrels of oil pass each day. Any disruption to shipping in the waterway has the potential to affect global energy markets.
Following the incident, oil prices rose as traders reacted to concerns over possible supply disruptions. International maritime authorities also issued warnings to vessels operating in the area, urging heightened caution.
Analysts say Tehran has increasingly used the Strait of Hormuz as a means of exerting pressure during periods of regional confrontation, warning that any further escalation could pose serious risks to global energy supplies and maritime security. (ILKHA)
