Magnitude 3.5 earthquake strikes Sea of Marmara, felt in parts of Istanbul

A light earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5 struck the Sea of Marmara on Thursday afternoon, July 31, 2025, at 1:36 p.m. local time, according to seismological data.
The quake, centered near Marmara Island, occurred at a shallow depth of 9.9 kilometers (6.2 miles). Its epicenter was approximately 33 kilometers southwest of Büyükçekmece, in the province of Tekirdağ.
Residents in coastal districts along the Sea of Marmara, including parts of Istanbul, reported feeling mild tremors. No damage or injuries have been reported so far.
Authorities have emphasized that the quake was minor and posed no tsunami risk. Monitoring stations continue to track seismic activity in the region, which lies along the North Anatolian Fault, one of Türkiye’s most active fault zones. (ILKHA)
