Islamic scholars set to gather in Diyarbakır to defend faith against modern challenges
The 10th Scholars’ Meeting, organized by the Union of Scholars and Madrasas (ITTIHADUL ULEMA), will commence Saturday in Diyarbakır, Türkiye, under the theme “Ideological Initiatives Designed Against Our Islamic Identity.”
The two-day event, held at the Saladin Ayyub Mosque Conference Hall in Yenişehir, will bring together prominent Islamic scholars, academics, and leaders from the Kurdistan Region and the broader Muslim world to tackle pressing ideological, cultural, and moral challenges facing Muslim societies.
The meeting aims to fortify Islamic values and family institutions against modern secular and liberal influences. Notable attendees include Molla Enver Kılıçaslan, President of İTTİHADUL ULEMA; Zekeriya Yapıcıoğlu, President of HÜDA PAR; Dr. Nawwaf Takruri, President of the Palestinian Scholars Union; Fawzi Barhum and Sami Abu Zuhri from HAMAS; Dr. Muhammed Salih Rashad from Iraqi Kurdistan; Prof. Dr. Ahmed Pancwini and Sheikh Zahid Haznawi from Syrian Kurdistan; and Saniullah Farahmand, Afghanistan’s Ambassador to Ankara.
On Saturday, the first session, moderated by Dr. Hüseyin Sudan, will feature Dr. Nevvaf Tekruri discussing “Jihad with Wealth in the Al-Aqsa Flood,” Mehmet Göktaş on the impact of secular and communist social projects on family structures, and Dr. Abdullatif Yasin on moral decay among Kurdish youth and the role of scholars in countering secularization. The second session, led by Prof. Dr. Nurullah Kurt, will include talks on gender roles, intellectual challenges to Islamic awakening, Kurdish social values, and the negative effects of nationalism, with contributions from Prof. Dr. Halil Çiçek, Dr. İmad Guwani, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Aziz, and Muhammed Şakir.
Sunday’s third session, moderated by Lawyer Ali Enver, will focus on safeguarding family and moral integrity. Speakers, including Prof. Dr. Vechi Sönmez, Dr. Ali Kiraati, Özkan Yaman, Dr. Mazin Şeyhani, and Yahya Öger, will address threats to the family, gender equality within Islamic and Kurdish contexts, social media’s impact on youth, and efforts to combat addiction.
The event will conclude with a final declaration outlining key outcomes and recommendations. Organizers emphasized that the meeting seeks to develop intellectual and practical strategies to protect Islamic identity, strengthen moral resilience, and counter ideological threats targeting Muslim societies, particularly in family, youth, education, and culture.
