Palestinian factions mark 77th Nakba anniversary, decry ongoing genocide in Gaza

As Palestinians around the world solemnly commemorate the 77th anniversary of the Nakba — the catastrophic mass displacement of over 750,000 Palestinians and the destruction of hundreds of villages during the creation of Israel in 1948 — leading Palestinian factions have issued impassioned statements decrying the renewed and intensified Nakba being perpetrated in Gaza and the occupied West Bank today.
The 2025 anniversary comes amid one of the deadliest Israeli military campaigns in recent history, with more than 52,000 Palestinians reported killed since October 2023, mostly in Gaza. Entire neighborhoods have been flattened, infrastructure has collapsed, and the majority of the population has been forcibly displaced, living under siege conditions with no access to basic necessities such as water, food, fuel, and medical care. Against this backdrop, Palestinian factions have united to send a clear message: the people of Palestine will not be erased, and their resistance remains unbroken.
Hamas: No New Nakba Will Be Imposed
The Hamas movement issued a statement declaring that despite the genocidal onslaught being waged by Israeli occupation forces with impunity and foreign backing, the Palestinian people's unity and resistance have repeatedly frustrated the occupier's expansionist and settler-colonial ambitions.
“No new Nakba will be imposed, and Gaza’s steadfastness will not be broken,” the statement read. Hamas emphasized that the resistance's resilience has thwarted numerous Israeli schemes aimed at displacing Palestinians from their land.
The group also reaffirmed that the Israeli regime has no legitimacy over any part of historic Palestine, pledging to continue resistance until full liberation and the right of return for refugees are achieved. Hamas condemned ongoing attempts to dismantle UNRWA, which it views as part of a broader plot to liquidate the Palestinian refugee cause.
Islamic Jihad: Resistance is the Response to Massacres
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement (PIJ) echoed these sentiments, stating that the massacres unfolding daily in Gaza and the West Bank are a direct continuation of the original Nakba of 1948. “What we are witnessing is a brutal extension of the ethnic cleansing launched 77 years ago,” PIJ stated, affirming that the resistance continues to inflict significant blows on the Israeli military.
PIJ further declared that the unrelenting crimes of the Israeli occupation, with full military and political backing from the United States and its allies, will only hasten the collapse of the Zionist project. The movement emphasized the moral and military support received from the broader Axis of Resistance, particularly from Lebanon, Yemen, and Iran, praising it as a vital source of solidarity.
PFLP: Build a Unified National Front
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) described the current situation in Gaza as a "bloody catastrophe," warning that the only fitting response is to rebuild the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) on a democratic and inclusive basis.
The PFLP strongly condemned normalization agreements signed by various Arab regimes, viewing them as a betrayal of the Palestinian cause and a tool to entrench occupation. The group called for an immediate end to all forms of security coordination with the Israeli military and demanded that Palestinian decision-making be liberated from the constraints of the Oslo framework.
Call for Global Conscience and Legal Accountability
Ali Faisal, Deputy Speaker of the Palestinian National Council, issued an impassioned plea for international justice, stating that the 77th Nakba anniversary must serve as a wake-up call for the global community.
“Israeli attempts to impose a second Nakba have failed,” he said, “but the price has been enormous.” He urged the international community to uphold existing United Nations resolutions and take immediate action to end the war, support Gaza’s reconstruction, and guarantee Palestinians their right to return and to establish a sovereign, independent state.
Faisal also called for Israeli political and military leaders to be held accountable before international courts for war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and genocide. He emphasized the critical role of global grassroots movements and civil society actors in pressuring governments and institutions to halt the Israeli war machine and support the Palestinian struggle for justice.
A Renewed Commitment to Return and Liberation
On this anniversary of catastrophe, Palestinian voices from every corner of the homeland and diaspora have united to express defiance in the face of annihilation. Their message is clear: despite decades of dispossession, siege, and aggression, they remain committed to the dream of return, justice, and national liberation. The memory of the Nakba endures not as a tale of victimhood, but as a call to resist, rebuild, and reclaim Palestine. (ILKHA)
