South Korea's parliament approves Kim Min-seok as prime minister

South Korea's National Assembly approved the appointment of Kim Min-seok as the country's new prime minister on Thursday, marking a significant step in President Lee Jae-myung's administration.
The motion to appoint Kim, a four-term lawmaker from the ruling Democratic Party, passed with 173 votes in favor, three against, and three invalid in the 300-member legislature.
Kim, 58, a seasoned politician and former journalist, was nominated by President Lee on June 4, shortly after the president's inauguration. Known for his progressive stance and deep ties within the Democratic Party, Kim has served as a lawmaker since 2004, representing constituencies in Seoul. His political career includes key roles in shaping economic and social welfare policies, earning him a reputation as a pragmatic yet reform-driven leader.
The vote, however, was marred by a boycott from the conservative opposition People Power Party, whose lawmakers refused to participate, demanding Kim's voluntary resignation. The opposition criticized Kim’s nomination, citing concerns over his past statements on economic reforms and his alignment with President Lee’s progressive agenda. Despite the boycott, the ruling party’s majority ensured the motion’s passage.
Kim’s appointment comes at a critical time as South Korea navigates economic challenges and regional tensions. Analysts expect him to prioritize policies aimed at addressing income inequality and boosting job creation, in line with President Lee’s campaign promises. Kim is also likely to play a central role in advancing diplomatic efforts on the Korean Peninsula.
The new prime minister is expected to address the nation in the coming days to outline his policy priorities. Meanwhile, the opposition’s resistance signals ongoing political friction in a deeply divided National Assembly. (ILKHA)
