Turkish cabinet to meet in Ahlat to commemorate historic Battle of Manzikert

The Turkish presidential cabinet will hold its next meeting on August 26 in Ahlat, a district in the eastern city of Bitlis, moving away from the traditional setting of the capital, Ankara.
The decision aligns with the commemoration of the Battle of Manzikert, a pivotal 1071 clash between the Byzantine and Seljuk empires that catalyzed the Turkification of Anatolia.
The anniversary of the battle, fought near what is now Malazgirt in Muş province, will be marked by a two-day celebration featuring traditional games, concerts, and cultural festivities. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, alongside members of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and coalition partner Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), will join ministers in attending the events. Political leaders are expected to visit specially erected marquees showcasing the region’s cultural heritage.
The Battle of Manzikert, believed to have taken place in the rugged terrain between Malazgirt and Ahlat, remains a significant moment in Turkish history.
Last year, President Erdoğan participated in the anniversary celebrations in Ahlat, accompanied by several cabinet members, underscoring the event’s enduring national importance. (ILKHA)
