Turkish Parliament Vice President Sırrı Süreyya Önder dies at 62

Sırrı Süreyya Önder, Vice President of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and a prominent Istanbul MP from the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), passed away on Thursday at Florence Nightingale Hospital in Istanbul.
Önder was rushed to the hospital on April 15 in critical condition, unconscious and suffering from both respiratory and cardiac arrest. Doctors diagnosed an aortic dissection and performed an emergency Bentall procedure, involving aortic valve and ascending aorta replacement, as well as a single-vessel bypass. Despite initial stabilization with ECMO support, Önder’s neurological condition worsened, leading to multi-organ failure. He died at 16:10 local time after 18 days in intensive care.
The hospital issued a statement expressing condolences: “Mr. Sırrı Süreyya Önder passed away today at 16:10. Our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.”
A respected figure in Turkish politics, Önder was known for his eloquence, intellectual contributions, and advocacy for justice and marginalized communities. His death prompted widespread tributes from across the political spectrum.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said, “I offer my heartfelt condolences. May Allah grant him mercy, and may his soul rest in paradise.” Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu added, “Despite all efforts, we lost Sırrı Süreyya Önder. My condolences to his family.” AK Party Spokesperson Ömer Çelik also mourned, stating, “Our condolences to the Grand National Assembly and our nation.”
Önder’s legacy as a parliamentarian, writer, and advocate continues to resonate in Türkiye. Funeral arrangements will be announced soon by his family and Parliament. (ILKHA)
