Türkiye's water management: Key statistics revealed in annual report

In the latest annual report by the Turkish Statistical Institute, key statistics regarding water abstraction, wastewater discharge, and water management practices across various sectors have been disclosed.
In 2022, municipalities, villages, manufacturing industry establishments, thermal power plants, organized industrial zones and mining establishments abstracted a total of 19.2 billion m3 of water from water resources, where in 2020 total water abstraction was 18.2 billion m3.
In 2022, 56.8% of the total amount of water was abstracted from sea, and a total of 43.2%, of which 22.1% was groundwater and 21.1% surface water, was abstracted from fresh water resources. 94% of the water abstraction from the sea was for cooling purposes.
Out of total amount of fresh water abstracted from water resources in 2022, 80.3% was abstracted by municipalities, 8.6% by manufacturing industry establishments, 4.7% by villages, 4.9% by mining establishments and organized industrial zones, and 1.5% by thermal power plants.
16.4 billion m3 of wastewater was discharged to receiving bodies
Municipalities, villages, manufacturing industry establishments, thermal power plants, organized industrial zones and mining establishments discharged 16.4 billion m3 of wastewater to receiving bodies. Out of this amount, 76.5% was discharged to sea, 19.5% to rivers, 1% to dams, 0.8% to septic tanks, 0.7% to lakes and artificial lakes, 0.2% onto land and 1.4% to other receiving bodies.
%80.2 of wastewater discharged to sea was cooling water.
Out of the total amount of wastewater discharged to receiving bodies, 52.4% was discharged by thermal power plants, 31.2% by municipalities, 12.9% by manufacturing industry establishments, 1.7% by organized industrial zones, 1% by mining establishments and 0.7% by villages.
79.3% of discharged wastewater, excluding cooling water was treated
79.3% of wastewater (excluding cooling water) discharged directly to receiving bodies was treated. Out of the total amount of wastewater discharged by municipalities, villages, manufacturing industry establishments, thermal power plants, organized industrial zones and mining establishments, 61.6% was cooling water, whereas 38.4% was other wastewater.
Water supply networks served 98.8% of municipal population
By water supply network 1 390 out of 1 391 municipalities were served. The rate of the municipal population served by water supply network in total municipal population is determined as 98.8%.
Municipalities abstracted 6.7 billion m3of water from water resources
6.7 billion m3 of water was abstracted from water resources by municipalities. Out of this amount, 43% was abstracted from dams, 29.1% from wells, 16.5% from springs, 7.7% from rivers and 3.7% from lakes/artificial lakes or sea.
60.8% of the abstracted water was treated by municipalities
Out of 6.7 billion m3 of water abstracted from water resources to water supply networks, 4.1 billion m3 was treated in water treatment plants. 90.4% of this amount was treated by conventional methods, 9.6% by advanced methods, and 0.03% by physical methods.
Sewerage systems served 92.8% of the municipal population
By sewerage systems 1 366 out of 1 391 municipalities were served. The rate of municipal population served by sewerage systems in total municipal population is determined as 92.8%.
Municipalities discharged 5.4 billion m3of wastewater
Out of 5.4 billion m3 of wastewater collected through sewerage systems, 48.6% was discharged into river, 38.6% into sea, 2.8% into dam, 1.9% into lake and artificial lake, 0.4% onto land, and 7.7% to other receiving bodies.
86.1% of wastewater discharged was treated by municipalities
Out of 5.4 billion m3 of wastewater discharged from sewerage system, 4.6 billion m3 was treated in wastewater treatment plants. 52.7% of this amount was treated by advanced treatment, 25.2% by biological treatment and, 21.7% by physical treatment, and 0.4% by natural treatment.
It was determined that 1.5% of the treated wastewater was reused in industrial processes, irrigation, etc.
Rate of municipal population served by wastewater treatment plants in total municipal population is determined as 77.7%.
Average amount of water abstracted per capita per day was 229 liters
The average amount of water abstracted by municipalities to water supply networks is calculated as 229 liters per capita per day. Concerning the three largest cities, the average amount of abstracted water per capita per day was 190 liters for İstanbul, 242 liters for Ankara, and 210 liters for İzmir.
Average amount of wastewater discharged per capita per day was 197 liters
The average amount of wastewater discharged from municipal sewerage systems per capita per day is calculated as 197 liters. Concerning the three largest cities, average amount of wastewater discharged per capita per day was 256 liters for Istanbul, 211 liters for Ankara, and 181 liters for Izmir. (ILKHA)
