Vice President Yılmaz to serve as acting president during Erdoğan’s U.S. visit
Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz will temporarily assume the duties of Türkiye’s presidency while President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan travels to the United States later this week.
According to a decree published in the Official Gazette, Yılmaz will serve as acting president under Article 106 of the Constitution during Erdoğan’s trip, which will take place between September 21–25.
President Erdoğan is scheduled to meet U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on September 25. The meeting was confirmed by both leaders on their social media accounts and will mark the first official visit by Erdoğan to Washington during Trump’s second term in office.
Trump highlighted the significance of the visit, noting that he will “host President Erdoğan at the White House on September 25.” During Trump’s first term, the two leaders met at the White House twice — in 2017 and 2019 — to discuss bilateral relations and regional issues.
The upcoming meeting is expected to focus on strengthening U.S.–Türkiye relations, regional security developments, and expanding cooperation on trade and defense. (ILKHA)
