Pakistan launches first hyperspectral satellite HS-1 from China

Pakistan marked a historic milestone in its space program with the successful launch of its first hyperspectral satellite, HS-1, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwestern China on Sunday.
The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) spearheaded the mission, which was celebrated as a significant step forward in the nation’s technological and developmental capabilities.
According to a statement from Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, the HS-1 satellite is equipped with advanced hyperspectral imaging technology, enabling it to capture data across a wide range of narrow spectral bands. This cutting-edge capability allows for precise monitoring and analysis of land usage, vegetation conditions, water resources, and urban development. The satellite is expected to bolster Pakistan’s capacities in critical areas such as precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, urban planning, and disaster management.
The HS-1 mission is also poised to support development initiatives, notably the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), by identifying geo-hazard risks and promoting sustainable infrastructure development. The Foreign Ministry highlighted that the satellite’s deployment underscores SUPARCO’s commitment to leveraging space technology for national progress.
The launch, which was streamed live from SUPARCO’s Karachi facility, further strengthens the longstanding partnership between Pakistan and China in the peaceful exploration of space. The collaboration is seen as a vital contributor to socioeconomic development for both nations.
Geo News reported that the successful deployment of HS-1 represents a pivotal achievement for Pakistan’s space program, reinforcing its role in advancing national and regional development goals through innovative space technology. (ILKHA)
