21 Nigerian athletes killed in fatal bus accident after national sports festival

A tragic bus crash in Nigeria on Saturday claimed the lives of 21 athletes returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival, casting a dark shadow over an event meant to celebrate national unity and athletic achievement.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the accident occurred on a highway as the athletes were traveling from Ogun State back to Kano in northern Nigeria — a journey of nearly 1,000 kilometers (620 miles). The crash did not involve any other vehicles, and early investigations point to fatigue and excessive speed as possible causes.
FRSC officials reported that the bus veered off the road during an afternoon segment of the return trip, following a long overnight drive after the close of the festival. The victims were part of a team that had participated in a range of competitions, including wheelchair basketball and traditional West African wrestling.
“This is a devastating loss for our country, especially coming after a festival that symbolized our strength, unity, and resilience,” said a government official on Sunday.
President Bola Tinubu had previously praised the national games for showcasing Nigeria's diversity and talent. The sudden loss of young athletes who embodied those values has sent shockwaves across the nation.
Condolences have poured in from across the country, with sports organizations, government ministries, and civil society groups calling for improved safety protocols for team travel.
Authorities say further investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the crash, and to assess whether stricter regulations or driver rest policies should be enforced for long-distance team travel.
Meanwhile, plans are being made to honor the deceased athletes and provide support to their grieving families. (ILKHA)
