37 dead, 23 injured in devastating bus collision in Tanzania

A catastrophic head-on collision between two buses in the Same district of Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro Region has resulted in at least 37 fatalities and 23 injuries, authorities confirmed.
The accident, which occurred on Saturday, has triggered a large-scale emergency response operation that continued into the night.
The collision involved a Chanel One long-distance passenger bus traveling from Moshi to the Tanga Region and a Toyota Coaster minibus heading from Same to Moshi. Both vehicles burst into flames upon impact, exacerbating the tragedy. Early reports indicate that passengers on the minibus were en route to a wedding celebration at Kuringe Hall in Moshi.
Kilimanjaro Regional Fire and Rescue Commander Jeremiah Mkomagi, who is overseeing the response efforts, provided an update late Saturday. “We have recovered 37 bodies from the scene, and 23 injured victims have been rushed to hospitals for treatment,” Mkomagi stated, noting that the casualty figures remain preliminary as operations continue.
Emergency teams, including firefighters, police, and medical personnel, are working tirelessly at the crash site to assist victims and manage the aftermath. Authorities have yet to release the identities of the deceased as they focus on supporting the injured and notifying families.
Investigations into the cause of the collision are underway, with officials yet to comment on potential factors contributing to the disaster. The incident has sent shockwaves through the region, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures.
Further updates are expected as rescue efforts progress and authorities continue their investigation. (ILKHA)
