A moderate earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck the southern Aegean on Wednesday evening, marking the latest and largest tremor after a week of intense seismic activity in the region.
The quake was registered at 21:09 local time (19:09 GMT) between the Greek islands of Santorini and Amorgos, an area that has recently attracted global attention.
The Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens confirmed the earthquake's magnitude, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre recorded it at 5.2 on the Richter scale. The tremor was measured at a focal depth of five kilometers and pinpointed at 18 kilometers south-southeast of the Arkesini site on Amorgos.
Just one minute before the 5.1-magnitude quake, a lighter tremor measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale was recorded closer to Athens. This tremor was pinpointed at 17 kilometers northeast of the harbor town of Lavrio, located east of the Greek capital on the southern Evoikos Gulf. The tremor was felt in parts of eastern Attica prefecture.
The southern Aegean region continues to experience heightened seismic activity, with residents and authorities remaining on alert for further tremors. (ILKHA)
