Afghanistan urges stronger global support to combat climate change impacts

Mullah Nooruddin Turabi, Head of the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA), met with Khairiatu Watson, Climate Change Advisor at the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
In the meeting, Mullah Turabi stressed that Afghanistan continues to suffer from a series of devastating natural disasters — including floods, droughts, and earthquakes — which have severely disrupted the lives and livelihoods of citizens across the country. He called for the urgent establishment of comprehensive preparedness and mitigation measures to lessen the risks associated with such disasters.
Highlighting Afghanistan’s limited resources and economic challenges, Mullah Turabi appealed to wealthier nations and international organizations to step up their support.
“Fundamental actions must be taken to address these issues,” Turabi asserted, warning that without swift intervention, the human and economic toll would only worsen.
Watson echoed these concerns, recognizing Afghanistan as one of the countries most severely affected by the global climate crisis. She reaffirmed UNAMA’s commitment to deepening its collaboration with ANDMA, pledging to help implement fast, sustainable solutions that can improve disaster resilience and recovery in the country.
As climate-induced disasters continue to intensify worldwide, Afghanistan — still grappling with decades of conflict and instability — remains exceptionally vulnerable. Both sides emphasized the urgent need for coordinated global efforts to address the looming climate emergency. (ILKHA)
