Deadly explosion rocks Shahid Rajaei Port in southern Iran, over 500 injured
The powerful blast, which caused extensive damage across the port area, led to the collapse of an administrative building, destroyed numerous vehicles, and shattered windows several kilometers away due to the force of the explosion.
Iran’s Tasnim News Agency confirmed the incident, stating that the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Initial reports from Iran’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) indicated approximately 210 injuries; however, as rescue operations continued, the number of injured was revised upwards to over 500.
The Iranian Civil Defense Organization reported that four people were martyred as a result of the explosion.
According to the Hormozgan Ports and Maritime Authority, the explosion originated from one section of the Shahid Rajaei port's dock, triggering a massive fire. Firefighting and emergency rescue teams responded swiftly, working to extinguish the blaze and secure the area.
Operations at Shahid Rajaei Port, a critical maritime hub for Iran’s southern trade routes, have been temporarily suspended as authorities assess the full extent of the damage and investigate the cause of the explosion.
Officials emphasized that a thorough investigation is underway amid speculation over potential causes, underscoring the port’s strategic importance for Iran’s regional shipping and economic infrastructure. (ILKHA)
