Alar Karis elected as Estonia’s new president

Alar Karis, the head of the National Museum, was elected as Estonian president on Tuesday in the second round of voting held in the country's Parliament.
Karis, who was the sole candidate in Estonia’s presidential election, received 72 out of 101 votes, local media outlets reported.
Karis failed to win enough support in the first round of voting on Monday. He held talks with opposition parties before the second round.
Alar Karis is an Estonian biologist, civil servant. He has been the head of the Estonian National Museum since 2018.
Karis previously served as the rector of Tartu University from 2007 and 2012, and as the Auditor General of Estonia between 2013 and 2018.
He will assume the office on October 11. (ILKHA)
