Alaska airspace locked down for Trump-Putin meeting on Friday

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, August 15, to discuss critical issues, including efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
However, with just days to go, the exact location and logistics of this high-profile summit remain shrouded in uncertainty, leaving Alaskan officials and residents seeking answers.
The White House has yet to disclose specific details about where the two leaders will convene, the duration of the meeting, or other logistical arrangements. As of Monday, spokespeople for Alaska’s governor and the state’s two U.S. senators confirmed they have no information about the visit. Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance stated early Monday that the city has not been involved in discussions but is ready to assist if needed.
Adding to the confusion, President Trump, during a Monday press conference, stated he was “going to Russia on Friday,” despite preparations clearly moving forward in Alaska. The contradictory remark has fueled speculation, but plans for the summit in the state appear to be solidifying. On Monday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a notice closing miles of airspace around Anchorage on Friday due to “VIP travel” in the area, signaling significant preparations for the event.
Shannon McCarthy, spokesperson for the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, confirmed that several temporary flight restrictions are scheduled for Friday. “There could also be traffic delays across the municipality,” McCarthy noted, adding that further details on affected roads would be released soon. “Because we have so many VIPs moving, we anticipate that they could be arriving at different airports.”
The summit, the first U.S.-Russia meeting since 2021, has drawn global attention as Trump pushes for a potential ceasefire in Ukraine. However, with logistical details scarce and the president’s own statements creating ambiguity, Alaskans are left bracing for disruptions while awaiting clarity on this historic event. (ILKHA)
