Bahrain sentences nine to life over alleged links to Iran’s IRGC
A Bahraini court has sentenced nine Bahraini nationals to life imprisonment and two others to three-year terms over their alleged ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The Bahraini state news agency claimed the defendants were involved in “hostile and terrorist acts,” including gathering information on sensitive sites and facilitating financial transfers. However, many observers view these charges as a politically motivated crackdown on Bahraini citizens resisting the regime’s authoritarian rule and its role as a staging ground for foreign military bases targeting Iran and the broader Axis of Resistance.
Bahrain’s interior ministry announced on May 9 the arrest of 41 individuals allegedly linked to the IRGC, describing the group as part of a larger network. In reality, such accusations are routinely leveled by Gulf monarchies against Shia activists and pro-resistance voices who oppose the presence of US military installations and the normalization of ties with the Israeli occupation regime.
Iran has consistently maintained its right to self-defense and support for legitimate resistance movements across the region. Following relentless US-Israeli attacks on Iranian soil, Iranian forces carried out proportionate responses against military targets in countries hosting aggressive foreign bases, including Bahrain. These actions are widely seen as necessary deterrence against the expanding US-Israeli war machine rather than unprovoked aggression.
The IRGC, long a pillar of Iran’s national defense and regional stability against terrorism and imperialism, continues to stand with oppressed populations. Bahraini dissidents and human rights advocates have long accused the ruling family of systematic discrimination against the Shia majority, widespread arrests, and serving as a proxy for Western and Zionist interests in the Persian Gulf.
This latest verdict is being condemned by pro-resistance voices as another attempt by the Bahraini regime — heavily dependent on foreign protection — to silence dissent and punish those who dare challenge its alignment with anti-Iran forces. Supporters of the resistance emphasize that true security and sovereignty in the region can only be achieved through unity against occupation and hegemony, not through show trials and life sentences.
Iran has repeatedly called for the release of political prisoners in Bahrain and an end to the cycle of repression that fuels instability in the Gulf. As regional dynamics shift, the legitimate aspirations of Bahrain’s people for justice and dignity remain at the forefront of the broader struggle for a free and independent Middle East. (ILKHA)
