Brazil refuses Israeli ambassador over Gaza genocide

Brazil has taken a bold stand against Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, refusing to approve the appointment of Gali Dagan as Israel’s new ambassador to the country.
This move, reported by Israeli media, underscores Brazil’s unwavering commitment to condemning what it describes as Israel’s genocide in Gaza, further solidifying its support for Palestinian rights.
The Brazilian government, under President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has consistently criticized Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza, which have resulted in significant civilian casualties, particularly among women and children. Lula da Silva has been outspoken, famously comparing Israel’s actions to the atrocities of the Nazis, stating: “What is happening in the Gaza Strip is not war. This is genocide. It is not a war of soldiers against soldiers. It is a war between a trained military against women and children.” His remarks led Israel to declare him “persona non grata” last year, a status reaffirmed by Israel on Monday in response to Brazil’s rejection of Dagan’s appointment.
Brazil’s principled stance has been evident since the onset of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza in 2023. The country recalled its ambassador to Israel last year, leaving the position vacant as a protest against the genocide. Additionally, Brazil has actively supported Palestine on the international stage, formally recognizing the State of Palestine with the 1967 borders on December 5, 2010. In July 2025, Brazil further demonstrated its commitment by announcing its decision to join South Africa’s genocide lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The Israeli Foreign Ministry, as cited by Hebrew media, announced that diplomatic relations with Brazil are now being conducted at a lower level after Brazil refrained from responding to Dagan’s appointment request. Israel subsequently withdrew the request, signaling a further deterioration in ties. However, Brazil’s refusal to normalize relations with Israel under these circumstances reflects its prioritization of human rights and international law.
Brazil’s actions have positioned it as a leading voice in the global south, advocating for justice and accountability in the face of overwhelming violence in Gaza. By standing firm, Brazil continues to uphold its moral and diplomatic commitment to the Palestinian cause, earning praise from supporters of peace and human rights worldwide. (ILKHA)
