At least 20 people were injured, including two seriously, after a car drove into a group of people in Munich.
The incident took place in the Dachauer Strasse area, near the city's central train station, according to local sources. Emergency services reported that some of the injured are in life-threatening condition. The driver was detained at the scene and is no longer posing a threat, local police said.
The incident occurred at the site of a rally linked to the transport union Verdi, as reported by local media. A police spokesman informed broadcaster BR that officers are investigating any potential connections to the demonstration.
Munich's Mayor Dieter Reiter expressed his deep shock, stating, "My thoughts are with the injured." He confirmed that children are among those injured.
Rescue helicopters are at the scene, providing immediate medical assistance to the injured. Police are still investigating whether anyone else was involved, amidst unconfirmed reports of a second person in the car.
This tragic event comes just hours before world leaders, including Ukraine's President Zelensky and US Vice President JD Vance, are set to arrive in Munich for the Munich Security Conference, which is scheduled for Friday. The incident occurred approximately 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) from the conference venue.
