Czech government set to approve mobile phone ban in primary schools
The Czech government is expected to approve legislation that would ban the use of mobile phones and other electronic communication devices in kindergartens, primary schools and the lower grades of multi-year grammar schools, as part of efforts to improve students' concentration and classroom environment.
The proposed bill, submitted by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Education Minister Robert Plaga, would prohibit students from using mobile phones not only during lessons but also throughout the school day, including during breaks, in school cafeterias and in after-school clubs.
Under the proposed legislation, exemptions would be granted for students who require electronic devices for medical reasons or special educational needs. Schools would also retain the authority to allow the use of mobile phones and other digital devices for educational purposes, classroom activities or school excursions.
Supporters of the proposal argue that limiting access to smartphones during the school day will help reduce distractions, improve students' attention, encourage face-to-face interaction and create a more focused learning environment.
However, the initiative has drawn criticism from some education experts and child rights advocates. Children's Ombudsman Martin Beneš has voiced opposition to the proposal, arguing that schools already possess sufficient authority to regulate mobile phone use through their own internal rules and policies without the need for nationwide legislation.
The government is expected to review the proposal in the coming days. If approved, the bill would proceed through the legislative process before becoming law.
The proposal reflects a broader trend across Europe, where several countries have introduced or are considering restrictions on smartphone use in schools amid growing concerns over their impact on students' academic performance, mental well-being and social development. (ILKHA)
