Death toll in Gaza surpasses 54,000 as Israeli onslaught nears 600th day

The humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip continues to deepen, with the death toll from Israel’s relentless military campaign now standing at 54,056, and 123,129 people wounded, according to updated figures released by Palestinian medical authorities on Tuesday.
Since Israel resumed its full-scale offensive on March 18, following the collapse of a temporary ceasefire, at least 3,901 Palestinians have been killed and 11,088 injured, the sources reported.
In just the past 24 hours, hospitals across the besieged enclave recorded 79 deaths and 169 injuries resulting from continued airstrikes, artillery shelling, and drone attacks. However, healthcare workers caution that the true toll is likely far higher, as countless civilians remain trapped beneath the rubble of flattened homes or are stranded in areas inaccessible due to ongoing bombardment and destroyed infrastructure.
Critically, these figures do not account for casualties in northern Gaza, where hospitals are either out of service or unreachable amid the devastation. Aid agencies warn that the lack of access is contributing to widespread undetected fatalities and untreated injuries, exacerbating the suffering of Gaza's war-weary population.
Nearly 600 days into the Israeli assault, the humanitarian crisis has spiraled out of control. International calls for a ceasefire have so far failed to bring relief to the more than two million residents of the Gaza Strip, most of whom are now displaced, starving, and without access to clean water, medical care, or shelter.
Human rights groups and UN officials have repeatedly condemned the Israeli campaign as a flagrant violation of international law, with accusations of genocide and war crimes mounting in global legal institutions.
The World Health Organization and other international agencies continue to appeal for unimpeded humanitarian access to the besieged territory, warning that the health system in Gaza is on the brink of total collapse. (ILKHA)
