EU condemns US tariffs on Mexico and Canada

The European Commission has strongly condemned the United States' decision to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada, citing threats to transatlantic supply chains and economic stability.
European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill stated that the tariffs on Mexico and Canada "threaten deeply integrated supply chains, investment flows, and economic stability across the Atlantic." He reiterated the EU's opposition to "protectionist measures that undermine open and fair trade," urging the U.S. to seek a "cooperative, rules-based solution."
The U.S. imposed a 25% blanket tariff on Mexico and Canada and an additional 10% duty on China, effective today. The tariffs on Mexico and Canada, initially scheduled for February, were delayed for a month following pledges from both countries to address illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič have recently emphasized the need for transatlantic cooperation to address "shared challenges" like "non-market capacity" and "global overcapacity". (ILKHA)
