At least 10 people have lost their lives following a devastating fire at a retirement home in the town of Villafranca de Ebro, Zaragoza, in northern Spain.
The blaze broke out in the early hours of Friday morning, according to officials.
Two additional residents sustained serious injuries and remain in critical condition, while several others received treatment for smoke inhalation. Those who perished are reported to have died from smoke inhalation, according to Spanish media outlets.
Firefighters were alerted to the incident at the Jardines de Villafranca residence at approximately 5 a.m. local time (4 a.m. UK time). Emergency services quickly evacuated residents from the facility, which houses 82 elderly individuals.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire as efforts continue to account for and care for the affected residents. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many expressing grief and offering support to victims' families.
