Four killed, one injured in Manhattan shooting; suspect dead

A gunman opened fire at 345 Park Avenue in Manhattan on Monday evening, killing four people, including an NYPD officer, and injuring another before dying from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, exited a double-parked Black BMW between 51st and 52nd Street and began shooting in the building’s lobby, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Surveillance footage showed Tamura sparing a woman exiting an elevator before taking it to the 33rd floor, where he fatally shot one person at the offices of Rudin Management Company, a major New York real estate firm. Tamura then shot himself in a stairwell with an assault rifle, Tisch said.
Among the victims was NYPD officer Didarul Islam, a Bangladesh immigrant working off-duty as a security guard. Mayor Eric Adams mourned Islam’s loss during a Monday night news conference. The NYPD confirmed the shooter acted alone and is deceased, with weapons and a prescription in Tamura’s name found in the BMW.
Tamura had a history of mental health issues in Las Vegas, according to Nevada law enforcement, and drove cross-country with stops in Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey before the attack. The NYPD believes the incident was isolated.
The FBI’s New York field office is supporting the investigation, and officials issued a shelter-in-place warning. Photographs showed people exiting the building around 7 p.m. ET with hands raised. The office at 345 Park Avenue houses the National Football League’s corporate offices, Blackstone headquarters, and JP Morgan Chase offices. An NFL security alert instructed employees to secure their locations and remain silent.
U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the shooting “horrific” and expressed prayers for Officer Islam and the city.
This marks the 254th mass shooting in the U.S. this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident with four or more victims, excluding the shooter.
The investigation is ongoing. (ILKHA)
