French President Macron to make historic visit to Greenland

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to become the first foreign head of state to visit Greenland since former US President Donald Trump’s controversial annexation remarks, according to a report by Le Monde on Saturday.
The visit, scheduled for June 15, follows invitations from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
Citing a source from the French presidential office, the Elysee, Le Monde reported that Macron’s visit will focus on critical discussions with Frederiksen and Nielsen. Key topics include security in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions, climate change, energy transition, and the supply of critical minerals. The Elysee emphasized that the visit aims to “strengthen cooperation with Greenland in these areas and contribute to enhancing European sovereignty.”
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has drawn global attention due to its strategic location and rich natural resources. Once a Danish colony, it became an integral part of Denmark in 1953 and gained home rule in 1979, though Denmark retains authority over its foreign affairs and defense. Trump’s repeated expressions of interest in acquiring Greenland have underscored its geopolitical significance.
President Macron’s upcoming trip is expected to include meetings with local officials and scientists, as well as visits to environmental research sites, reinforcing France’s commitment to addressing climate change and enhancing Arctic cooperation. (ILKHA)
