Gaza Health Ministry: 6,000 amputees urgently need long-term rehabilitation
The Palestinian Ministry of Health has warned that at least 6,000 amputees in Gaza urgently require long-term rehabilitation and specialized care, highlighting a “shocking and worsening humanitarian reality” for thousands of survivors of the ongoing Israeli genocide.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the ministry said that the scale of amputations has reached alarming levels, with countless Palestinians left without the medical, psychological, or social support needed to cope with life-altering injuries.
The ministry emphasized that children account for 25 percent of all amputations, representing a generation facing permanent disabilities at an early age due to relentless Israeli attacks.
“These wounded Palestinians are enduring immense suffering, and their families bear the brunt of these atrocities,” the ministry said, calling for comprehensive rehabilitation programs, psychosocial support, and long-term community integration services.
The Health Ministry appealed to international organizations to urgently prioritize the care of Gaza’s amputees, and to scale up access to specialized rehabilitation, prosthetics, and mental health programs, stressing that immediate intervention is critical to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.
“Every day without support is another day of unimaginable suffering for Gaza’s survivors,” the ministry added, urging the global community to act decisively in response to the humanitarian crisis caused by the ongoing Israeli aggression. (ILKHA)
