A significant number of homes in Dawhenya, located in the Greater Accra Region, are grappling with severe flooding following spillage from an irrigation dam.
The flooding has affected approximately 200 homes, particularly in the Adotey area, according to local sources.
Residents, including an Assemblyman from the affected area, expressed their distress, highlighting that this is not the first time they have faced flooding issues. The recent incident is described as particularly severe, with water levels reaching window levels in some homes.
"In my electoral area, over 200 houses have been affected. The water is up to the window level. This is not the first. This year alone, this is the third time," shared the Assemblyman.
According to Samuel Tetteh, the Scheme Manager for the Dawhenya Dam project, the dam is designed to automatically release excess water. He attributed the spillage to heavy rains upstream, particularly in the Dodowa areas.
"The dam is built in such a way that when the water rises, it spills on its own, which has been happening over the years. But this morning, what happened is from another stream that flows every two to three years. This stream comes from the Shai Hills area, adding to the dam’s stream and causing the flood, not from the main dam. Yes, the dam is still spilling. Normally depending on the rainfall upstream in the Dodowa areas, it can flood for about two to three days. We are not responsible for the dam," explained Tetteh.
Local authorities are working to address the immediate challenges posed by the flooding, providing assistance to affected residents as they navigate the aftermath of this natural disaster. (ILKHA)
