Hamas has disclosed the names of four Israeli female soldiers set to be released as part of the second prisoner exchange under the Gaza ceasefire.
According to a statement issued on Friday by Abu Obeida, the spokesperson for Hamas’ armed wing, the soldiers identified for release are Liri Albag, Karina Ariev, Danielle Gilboa, and Naama Levy.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed receiving the list through mediators and stated that Israel’s response would be provided later.
The exchange is scheduled to commence on Saturday afternoon and follows a similar swap conducted last Sunday, which saw three Israeli women released in exchange for 90 Palestinian prisoners.
As part of the ongoing ceasefire agreement, Israel has committed to freeing 50 Palestinian prisoners for every Israeli soldier released during the first phase of the deal. This weekend’s exchange is expected to result in the release of 200 Palestinian prisoners in return for the four Israeli soldiers.
Reports from Israeli media suggest that the latest list of individuals to be released does not align with the originally agreed-upon terms of the ceasefire. It was anticipated that civilians, followed by soldiers and individuals with severe health conditions, would be prioritized for release.
“Israel wanted civilians to be released first, then soldiers, and then those who were deemed extremely ill as part of the first phase of this deal,” Al Jazeera’s Hamduh Salut reported from Amman, Jordan.
The proposed prisoner swap is a continuation of efforts to maintain the ceasefire and address longstanding tensions between the two sides. Further details on Israel’s response and the logistics of the exchange are expected in the coming hours. (ILKHA)
