Hamas has called for an emergency Arab summit to reject US President Donald Trump’s proposal to take over Gaza and forcibly resettle its Palestinian population elsewhere.
In a statement on Thursday, Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem condemned Trump’s remarks as a blatant attempt at occupation and ethnic cleansing.
“Trump’s comments are completely unacceptable. Gaza belongs to its people, and they will not leave,” Qassem declared. “We do not need any country to run Gaza, nor will we accept replacing one occupation with another.”
The call for an urgent Arab response comes after Trump, standing alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, announced a plan to “take over” Gaza and displace its people under the pretext of redevelopment. He claimed the US would transform the besieged enclave into the “Riviera of the Middle East” while forcing Palestinians to relocate to other countries.
Hamas has urged Palestinian unity to resist what it calls a coordinated Israeli-US effort to erase Palestinian identity and sovereignty. The group also called on Arab nations to reject Trump’s pressure to accept Palestinian refugees and to stand firm against any attempts to forcibly remove Gaza’s population.
Trump’s proposal has sparked global outrage, with Palestinian leaders, Arab states, and countries including Canada, France, Germany, and the UK condemning it as a violation of Palestinian rights. Egypt and Jordan, frequently mentioned as potential destinations for displaced Palestinians, have categorically rejected the idea, reaffirming their support for Palestinian self-determination.
Trump’s remarks come just weeks after a ceasefire agreement took effect on January 19, pausing Israel’s devastating assault on Gaza. The war has killed more than 47,500 Palestinians, wounded over 111,000, and left the territory in ruins, with entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble.
Palestinian officials and human rights groups have warned that any forced displacement of Gaza’s population would amount to a war crime and have called for international intervention to prevent further Israeli aggression.
Hamas has vowed that Palestinians will remain steadfast in their land, resisting all efforts to erase their presence. (ILKHA)
