Heavy rains trigger widespread damage across Badakhshan villages in northeastern Afghanistan

Heavy rainfall triggered severe flash floods in Jurm district, Badakhshan province, causing significant financial losses and damaging critical infrastructure, local officials reported on Saturday.
Mawlawi Mohammad Akram Akbari, head of the Natural Disaster Management Authority in Badakhshan, confirmed that the floods ravaged multiple villages, including Kharandab, Sanglakh, Dahsangan, and Soch Payan. The disaster destroyed hundreds of acres of farmland, fruit orchards, irrigation dams, two water canals, three residential houses, and a mosque, according to initial assessments.
Akbari noted that the full extent of the damage remains unclear, as comprehensive reports from remote villages and other parts of the province are still pending. Relief and survey teams are set to be deployed to the affected areas to conduct detailed assessments and gather further data.
Local authorities are bracing for potentially greater losses as more information emerges from the hardest-hit regions. Efforts to provide aid and support to affected residents are underway. (ILKHA)
