Iran slams new US sanctions as 'economic terrorism'

Iran has strongly condemned the latest round of United States sanctions imposed on Iranian and non-Iranian individuals and entities, denouncing them as illegal, hostile, and a blatant act of economic terrorism aimed at undermining Iran’s sovereignty and development.
In a statement released on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei criticized the sanctions as a continuation of Washington’s “inhumane and unlawful” pressure campaign, describing the measures as a clear violation of international law and fundamental human rights standards.
“These sanctions, introduced under various pretexts in recent days, reflect the U.S. administration’s continued disregard for legal norms and its effort to sabotage legitimate cooperation between independent and developing nations,” Baghaei stated. He accused the U.S. of weaponizing economic tools to enforce its will globally and of seeking to disrupt friendly relations between sovereign states through coercion and intimidation.
Labeling the move as part of the “failed and criminal” maximum pressure campaign against Iran, Baghaei said the new sanctions further exposed the contradictory stance of U.S. policymakers who claim to support diplomacy while actively working to destabilize Iran’s economic and technological advancement.
Baghaei asserted that the U.S. must bear full responsibility for the consequences of its provocative and aggressive policies. “These measures are not only counterproductive but also underscore the lack of goodwill from Washington in resolving issues through diplomatic channels,” he said.
The spokesman also highlighted the Iranian people’s longstanding resistance to American hostility, recalling decades of sanctions, interference, and efforts to block Iran’s scientific and economic progress. He said these experiences have only deepened Iranian distrust toward the United States.
“The great Iranian nation will not yield to threats and intimidation,” Baghaei declared, reaffirming Tehran’s resolve to defend its sovereignty and pursue independent development despite external pressure.
The statement comes amid growing international criticism of unilateral sanctions and as calls mount for reforming global systems that allow powerful countries to unilaterally impose economic restrictions in violation of international norms. (ILKHA)
