Israel exploits regional crisis to tighten illegal blockade on Gaza, rights group warns
Israel has once again intensified its illegal blockade on the Gaza Strip by closing key crossings, including Kerem Shalom and Rafah, in a move widely condemned as collective punishment against the besieged Palestinian population.
The Gaza Center for Human Rights strongly denounced the decision on Monday, stating that Israel is exploiting the military escalation with Iran to further strangle Gaza’s civilians and tie their basic humanitarian needs to unrelated regional conflicts.
In a strongly worded statement, the center declared that the closure constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law. It emphasized that Palestinian civilians must never be used as pawns for political pressure or forced to suffer the consequences of conflicts in which they have no involvement.
The center highlighted that this latest punitive measure comes while Gaza is already enduring a severe humanitarian catastrophe. Aid and fuel deliveries remain drastically below the levels agreed upon in the October ceasefire, leaving the population facing critical shortages of food, medicine, and fuel.
“Any additional closure, even temporary, will have catastrophic consequences,” the center warned, pointing to the collapsing health sector and acute shortages that are endangering the lives of thousands of patients and wounded Palestinians who desperately rely on open crossings for medical treatment.
The organization stressed that restrictions on movement and essential supplies continue to disproportionately harm the most vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and the injured.
The Gaza Center for Human Rights demanded the immediate and unconditional reopening of all Gaza crossings, the uninterrupted entry of humanitarian and commercial goods, free movement for patients and travelers, and full adherence to the agreed quantities of aid and fuel.
The center also called on the international community to act urgently and decisively to stop Israel from using regional developments as a pretext to tighten its illegal blockade on Gaza. It urged global powers to provide meaningful protection for Palestinian civilians and to hold Israel accountable for these ongoing violations of international law. (ILKHA)
