Israel’s blockade starves Gaza: 5,800 children diagnosed with malnutrition in June

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) issued a dire warning on Sunday, reporting that over 5,800 children in the Gaza Strip were diagnosed with malnutrition in June alone, a direct consequence of Israel’s relentless blockade and ongoing genocidal war.
The alarming figures, which include over 1,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition, mark a worsening crisis for the fourth consecutive month.
In a statement posted on X, UNICEF described the situation as “a child survival emergency,” underscoring the catastrophic impact of Israel’s suffocating restrictions on food, medical supplies, and essential services. The blockade, combined with the devastating war, has pushed Gaza’s children to the brink, with families struggling to access even basic necessities to sustain life.
“Israel’s brutal blockade and military aggression have created a humanitarian disaster, starving thousands of innocent children,” UNICEF’s statement implicitly condemned, calling for urgent and unrestricted delivery of aid to avert further tragedy. The agency emphasized that humanitarian assistance must be provided “at speed and scale” to address the escalating crisis and save lives.
The blockade has systematically deprived Gaza’s 2 million residents of adequate food, clean water, and healthcare, exacerbating poverty and hunger. Coupled with the ongoing Israeli military campaign, which has demolished infrastructure and displaced countless families, the blockade has turned Gaza into a prison where children bear the brunt of the suffering.
UNICEF’s report serves as a searing indictment of Israel’s policies, which have plunged Gaza’s youngest generation into a malnutrition crisis of unprecedented proportions. As the international community faces mounting pressure to act, the call for an end to Israel’s fatal blockade grows louder, with children’s lives hanging in the balance. (ILKHA)
