Japan: 6.1-magnitude earthquake strikes off eastern Hokkaido

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan’s Nemuro Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido early Thursday morning, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency.
The tremor occurred at 8:08 a.m. local time (2308 GMT Wednesday) and was recorded at a shallow offshore depth, southeast of the Nemuro Peninsula. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at 5.9 magnitude.
Authorities reported no injuries or damage to infrastructure, and the Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake.
While the quake may cause minor tidal fluctuations—less than 20 centimeters—along the eastern Pacific coast of Hokkaido, officials assured the public that there is no risk of significant impact or coastal damage.
Japan, situated on the seismically active Pacific “Ring of Fire,” frequently experiences earthquakes, though the country’s infrastructure is well-equipped to handle such events. (ILKHA)
