Jordan condemns Israel’s approval of over 2,000 new illegal settlement units in West Bank
Jordan has strongly denounced the Israeli authorities’ latest decision to advance the construction of 2,162 new settler housing units in the occupied West Bank, describing it as a blatant violation of international law and a deliberate attempt to entrench the illegal occupation.
The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates issued a stern condemnation on Wednesday, stressing that this aggressive expansion of illegal settlements represents yet another step in Israel’s colonial project aimed at erasing Palestinian presence and undermining any realistic path to peace.
“The approval of these new settlement units constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law,” the ministry stated. It further emphasized that such actions severely undermine efforts to achieve a just two-state solution and directly infringe upon the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination, an end to the occupation, and the establishment of their independent, sovereign state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with occupied East Jerusalem as its capital.
Ambassador Fouad Majali, the official spokesperson for the ministry, firmly rejected the extremist Israeli government’s continued colonial schemes. “The Kingdom of Jordan absolutely condemns and rejects these settlement plans, which entrench the occupation and colonial expansion while undermining the international consensus for a two-state solution,” he said.
Majali highlighted that these illegal measures violate numerous international resolutions, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which explicitly condemns Israel’s attempts to alter the demographic composition, character, and status of the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem. He also referenced the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion, which clearly affirmed the illegality of Israel’s occupation and declared settlement construction and annexation in the West Bank to be unlawful.
The Jordanian statement called upon the international community to shoulder its legal and moral responsibilities by taking concrete action to compel Israel to immediately halt its dangerous escalation and unilateral illegal policies in the occupied Palestinian territories.
“Fulfilling the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people — foremost among them the establishment of their independent state on their national soil — remains the only path toward achieving a just and comprehensive peace that brings security and stability to the entire region,” Majali stressed.
This latest settlement announcement comes amid ongoing criticism of Israel’s expansionist policies, widely viewed by Palestinians and much of the international community as a systematic effort to colonize occupied land and preempt the creation of a viable Palestinian state. Human rights organizations and legal experts have long condemned Israeli settlements as war crimes under international law due to their role in displacing Palestinians and fragmenting their territory.
